Mattress Recycling and Yard Waste Updates
Fall Yard Waste Collection 2022
October 17 through November 28
Yard Waste is running differently than in the past. The Town is asking residents to have their yard waste to the curb by Monday at 7 am on the designated yard waste weeks. The truck will collect yard waste throughout the week. The term “yard waste day” will not be used. The map routes (designated as days of the week) are for the truck to use as they collect through the town. The truck is in town for 6 weeks to collect the yard waste at the curb.
If the collection is light, you may see the truck in your area during the first week. If the collection is heavy, the truck will not move to the next section of Town until they finish the current route they are working in. You, as a resident, are free to put what you have to the curb throughout the 6 weeks, but it may be a week or two before the truck reaches your area.
Note: Although the trucks are in Town collecting for 6 weeks, residents might not get 6 collections.
Once they have moved through the entire Town, they will return to the beginning of the route and continue through the Town.
Once the six weeks have ended, they will do one last sweep of the Town for any misses during this period.
Mattress and Box Spring Recycling
Effective October 3, 2022, Republic Services will no longer be collecting mattresses and/or box springs for the Town of Burlington. This is in response to the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) ban on mattress and textile disposal. More information on this ban can be found here.
The Town of Burlington is partnering with UTEC, a non-profit company that employs at-risk young adults. Below is pertinent information on how to recycle a mattress and/or box spring with UTEC:
- Each mattress or box spring will cost $34 (a mattress is 1 item and a box spring is 1 item)
- All sizes will be collected
- Items will be collected if damaged, broken, or wet
- If an item is contaminated (ex. bed bugs), they will not be collected.
- You will be directed to call Republic Services for disposal of contaminated items
To schedule a curbside pickup of a mattress and/or box spring with UTEC, please go to their website and scroll down to Schedule Service. Find Burlington and fill out all requested information. If you do not have access to a computer, please call UTEC at 978-856-3997:
