Headstones & Markers

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) provides, at no cost to the applicant, a Government-issued headstone or marker for the unmarked grave of any eligible deceased veteran, regardless of the date of death, in cemeteries worldwide.

For eligible veterans who died on or after November 1, 1990, and whose grave is marked with a privately purchased headstone, a Government-furnished headstone or marker may be provided. Additionally, a Government-furnished medallion may be issued for eligible veterans who served on or after April 6, 1917, and whose grave is marked with a privately purchased headstone or marker.

Presidential Memorial Certificate

A Presidential Memorial Certificate (PMC) is an engraved certificate, signed by the current president, to honor the memory of a deceased veteran.

Reimbursement for Burial Expenses

Eligible veterans may be entitled to reimbursement of up to $2,000 for funeral and burial expenses.
